Problem of the week; Problem C; Decathlon is on!

                                                
Problem (for those who can't read the picture):
Willy Makit is participating at the local level of a decathlon in which he competes in 10 events.  In each event the maximum possible score is 10 points. To advance to the regional level of the  decathlon a competitor must earn a minimum total score of 75 points.
On the first five events, Willy had an average score of 6.8. On the next three events his average  score was 7.2.
What must Willy's average on his final two events in order to have a total score of exactly 75  points?

Solution:
Step 1:
What I know:

What I want to know:

Step 2:
Strategy:
First thing I need to do is find the average along with the both sides of the numbers. In fact, that is pretty much what we need to do. Once we find out the average of both the first 5 events then the next 3 events and subtract it from 75.0. Then later divide it by 2 so that we can find out how many points are needed as minimum to pass to the next level.
Step 3:
Carry out the plan:
To determine an average, we add the numbers together and divide the total by the number of numbers.
Average =Total÷Number of Numbers
So to determine the total we would multiply the average by the number of  numbers.
Total = Average × Number of Numbers
Total Score for First 5 Events = 6.8 × 5 = 34.0
Total Score for Next 3 Events = 7.2 × 3 = 21.6
Total Score to Move On = 75.0
Total Score Needed for Last Two Events = 75.0 − 34.0 − 21.6 = 19.4
Average Score for Final 2 Events = 19.4 ÷ 2 = 9.7
Step 4:
Recheck:
9.7×2=19.4
75.0-19.4=55.6
55.6-21.6=34.0 OR 55.6-34.0=21.6
34.0÷5=6.8 OR 34.0÷6.8=5
21.6÷3=7.2 OR 21.6÷7.2=3 (It is confirmed that Willy Makit needs at least 9.7 on her last 2 competitions to pass to the regional level of the decathlon)

Problem of the week

Problem:
Manny Kerr runs a company that specializes in grooming and caring for lawns. Manny has a push mower and a powerful riding mower. At one location it takes him 5 hours to cut the entire lawn with the push mower but only 70 minutes with the powerful riding mower.
After 90% of the lawn was cut using the powerful riding mower, the remainder was cut using the push mower.
How many minutes did it take Manny to cut the entire lawn?
Solution:
Step 1:
What I know:
-I know that Manny has a push mower and a powerful riding mower
-At 1 location it takes; 5 hours for push mower, 70 mins for riding mower
-90% of lawn was cut using powerful riding mower
-Rest was cut using push mower
What I want to know:
How many minutes did it take Manny to cut the entire lawn?
Step 2:
Plan:
First we have to find 90% of 70 mins for the powerful riding mower. In order to do that we have to convert the percent into a decimal and multiply it. If I divide the decimal, I will get a higher number, so multiplying it would make the number lower. After I find that, since we used 90%, the remaining percentage would be 10%. So I would convert 10% into a decimal and then find 10% out of 5 hours. For this to be easier to calculate we have to convert the hours into minutes so I would multiply how ever minutes there are in a hour by 10% to find that answer. Once that is finished, I will add both answers together to reach the total time it takes to mow the lawn.
Step 3:
Carry out the plan:
90% of 70
90%=90/100=9/10=0.9
0.9x70=63
63 is 90% of 70
5 hours=how many minutes?
1 hour=60 mins
So 5 hours=5x60
5x60=300
There are 300 mins in 5 hours.
10% of 300
10%=10/100=1/10=0.1
0.1x300=30
30 is 10% of 300
Now let’s add them all up.
30+63=93
It took Manny 93 minutes to mow the entire lawn.
Step 4:
Recheck
93-30=63 OR 93-30=63
300/30=0.1 OR 0.1/30=300
300 mins=how many hours
300/60 (Since there are 60 mins in one hour)=5
5 hours=300 mins
70/63=0.9 OR 0.9/63=70
0.9=9/10=90/100=90%
0.1=1/10=10/100=10%
10% is the remainder out 100% from 90%.

Conclusion
In conclusion, it takes Manny Kerr 63 minutes to mow 90% of the lawn with the Power Riding Mower and 10% of the lawn with the Push Mower.

Speech Competition (First paragraph)


(Girl one [Normal]): Oh my god, look, it’s her! *points finger*
(Girl two [British accent]): Ugh! She’s SO LAME!
(Girl one): Come on girls! Let’s have a little fun.
I was walking back home from school thinking that the school day is FINALLY done. Then she walked in front of me.
(Girl three [Sassy girl accent]): And where do you think you’re going?
(Me [Shy girl accent]): Um…...I’m just going home.
I tried to move past them. I tried to ignore them before things got worse.
(Girl two): *Stands in her way* Oh no you don’t! We’re not done playing with you yet.
She shoves me into the mud. My glasses may have fallen, but I can still see the smirks on their faces.
(Girl one): Let’s give you the treatment that people like you deserve!
She stared beating me up. Then one by one, the rest joined. It was either kicking me or kicking mud on my face.
(Each girl one by one): Get lost NERD! FREAK! Go burn in hell! Just go die!

I couldn’t bare it anymore! I picked up my glasses. I don’t care about my bag; I don’t care how I looked. RUN! I just wanted to run! I was running street by street all the way to my house. I unlocked the door and practically flew in. I ran upstairs, past my baby brother’s room and into the bathroom. I checked the mirror, I looked like a mess! Those girls were right; I AM a loser! Their words kept ringing in my head; “NERD! FREAK! Why do you even bother?! People like you! Just go die!” They weren’t stopping, (Gradually getting louder) get these stupid voices out of my head! I started to cry. “IT BURNS!!!! IT’S BURNING RIGHT HERE!!!! *Gestures to heart* WHY ME?! WHY IS IT ALWAYS ME?!” I saw a pocket knife on the sink. I slowly picked it up…opened it…and then…...

Math Word Problem


(For those who can't read what is on the picture)
A train 1000 meters long travels through a tunnel 3000 meters long. 30 seconds pass from the time that the last car just completely entered the tunnel until the time when the front of the engine emerges from the other end.

Determine the speed of the train when it travels in kilometers per hour.

Step 1: What is important from the question?

What I know
-The train is 1000 meters long
-The train went through a 3000 meter tunnel in 30 seconds

What I want to know
-What is the speed of the train when it travels in kilometers per hour?

Step 2: Let's make a plan!

Okay, the question is asking me to find out how much time it will take for the train to travel a kilometer. So what I need to do first, is that find out how much distance is covered in a second. In order to do that I can do the equation: 3000 meters/30 seconds. The reason why i would need to do that is that, once I found out how much distance is traveled in a second I will multipluy that by 60 since there are 60 seconds in 1 minute. Whatever I multiply to the top of the fraction, I have to multiply the bottom too, so I'll multiply both the meters and the seconds by 60. After that, since I have it for per minute, I need to turn it into meters/kilometers per hour. So I will multiply by 60 to the numerator and the denomanator so that the fraction can still reduce to the seconds and for us to find out how many kilometers is traveled in 1 hour.

Step 3: Now that we have a plan, let's see if it works!

3000 meters  =  100 meters
30 seconds    =  1 second

Now to find it per minute...

100 meters ×60 = 6000 meters                
1 second     ×60 = 60 seconds/1 minute

Now to find it per hour

6000 meters ×60 =  120000 meters       
1 minute        ×60 =  60 minutes/1 hour

Step 4: Let's check to see if I'm right...(I hope I am)

120000 meters ÷60 = 6000meters
1 hour                 ÷60 = 1 minute

6000 meters ×60 = 100 meters
1 minute        ×60 = 1 seconds

This proves that the train will travel 120,000 meters/120 kilometers per hour.

Step 5: Conclusion, our final statement

In conclusion, the train will travel 120km per hour.

Art exhibition



I decided that this piece of art was the best to chose from. I found this piece of art was unique because of it's texture. It may be a painting like the first piece of art that I saw, but this one is different, The first one is a mural on a wall while the third picture is a sculpture that someone took a picture of. This second picture is in a league of it's own. It's so unique in it's own way. Let me explain why I say that this painting is unique.




Take a look at the three pictures. What do you think the difference is? (Take two minutes to look at the pictures before u continue reading.) 

If you think that the pieces of art has a more abstract taste to it than the other one than you understand my taste and what I think. If you do not understand what I am talking about........then hear me out for a sec. Take a look at the 3 pictures again. Now, what do they all have in common? Personally, What I noticed is that they all have humans in each picture.  In the first and last picture, it is easy to tell that there are humans in each picture. However, if you take a closer look in the second picture, you will see humans, but not right away. In the picture towards the furthest left and right you can see trees and you know that they are trees. However, in the middle of the picture there are some kind of white and black splooges. I at first wondered what they could possibly be then I looked closer and observed the picture more carefully and then I noticed that those black and white splooges are a man and woman walking along the alleyway. It's harder to tell that there are people in the second picture, so therefore it means that the context in the picture is harder to presume. That is what I think is different between these pictures is. The fact that the picture looks different.

Reflection:  Everyone can define their own way of understanding art and there is no correct way to judge it. Art is unique in its own way because what someone may think is trash, someone else may think it is a beautiful piece of art. Just like that quote beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone sees things differently and look at things in a different perspective. “Artists, just like everybody else, do not see the world in any singularly privileged or objectively truthful way…” (Dissanayake p. 5) I enjoy art because of the history and culture behind it all. Everyone has a way of looking at things through a different perspective and personal experience behind it. I learned that people’s view and understanding of art also changed from time to time. I believe one of the main reasons for the expanding of art was that people’s needs and wants were changing all the time
Ellen mentioned in her article that, “art is a normal and necessary behavior of human beings that like talking, experience, playing, working, socializing, learning, loving and nurturing should be encouraged and developed in everyone” (Dissanayake p. 10). I added this picture to this assignment because I thought it showed that it demonstrated talking, experience,playing, socializing and loving all in the same picture. The picture shows a bright beautiful setting that it eye catching. I believe that anything anyone draws is art because it is true talent that I do not have. Art has a way to show many different messages and display many meanings through just a painting. There are many different meanings that can be portrayed through art work, which makes it so unique!

How I express myself artistically


Music was and still is a huge part of my life. No matter what I do or think, in my mind theirs always some kind of rhythm or pattern to it. There's also this part of me that listens to different genres, play different instruments and sing. But what I like most is creating rhythms or patterns for me to follow. Everyday from when I wake up to when I sleep again their is always a pattern to what I do weekly. So you could say that my entire life, rather say OUR entire lives are one big pattern, one big rhythm, one big musical symphony.

When I was about 3 years old I got music into my life. I started off with my mom's vocal and violin class that refers to our culture. I was also doing keyboard at the time. I don't remember exactly where it is, but I do remember that we had to drive past the York-dale Mall, which isn't too far from where I live. I still continue my mom's classes today. However, sadly my keyboard teacher had passed away. She had cancer if I remember correctly, what was even more sad was that she passed away on my birthday. This left my mother and I really upset. She asked me if I wanted to quit keyboard and I of course, being the stubborn little kid I was, I refused and asked her if I could take it a step further and learn piano instead. She was okay with it but it was harder than we thought to find me a new teacher.





After my keyboard teacher (I don't remember her name) I went to Mr.Brian. I tried playing scales on the piano he had but it was really hard to press the notes. I never understood why but then her told me that since I was learning keyboard before, it would be harder for me to play notes on the piano. Also the keyboard doesn't have all 88 keys while the keyboard I had, only had 61 keys :(. So what I had to do was, I had to get a piano but I didn't get the acoustic one because it's to big to fit in my house, so we got the electric one. The acoustic piano has all the keys but, inside it has strings and hammers to play the notes, and the strings were all different sizes, it was amazing to see and behold. Then we have the electric piano, which I'm pretty sure most pianists have. It's smaller and runs on wires and has a lot of buttons to make different sounds, record pieces of music and even control the sound, which the acoustic one can't do. So I got an electric piano and did my practices every day. However, my mother felt that I was being ripped off and should go towards a higher grade. It had been about a year and I still didn't move up. So my mom forced me to quit and I took lessons elsewhere.

The guy that came over to check my skills said that I should be going to level 3. So I joined a class that had almost finished level 2. Honestly, those guys are amazing. Some kids are older than me while others were younger, I even had someone the same age as me. We were all in the same class with the greatest piano teacher who helps me strive for excellence every single day. Her name is Zhanna, and she makes sure that our class is the best class and we are the best students to leave our conservatory. Which in my opinion, we are. I feel we are the best class. We take our work seriously and we always practice at home. I'm proud to say that I had just passed level 5 in an amazing state. I got 95 marks out of 100, which I wasn't surprised by because I practiced and my piano teacher trained me well. We had to play scales, 3 songs by memory plus making sure that you are playing the song with character, sight reading, play back, clap back, Hannon, and it goes into further detail. Each level gets harder and harder and more advanced. There are different components that we must follow in order to pass. In order to understand these components, we take theory lessons.

Not many people joined theory the same time I did from my class. In fact. It was only 3 of us that got shifted. We had to join the grade 6s last year for the Basic Rudiments test that people usually take in grade 6. We got the opportunity to take it now, because: A; Zhanna felt we were knowledgeable enough in piano to do so, and B; We would finish with our certificate that we are meant to get directly after our grade. So I would get my grade 6 marks with the certificate to prove it. I agreed to go because, I wanted to finish theory before others in my class did so I was okay with it. When I walked into the the theory room, I saw people that I never met before. I was lucky that I knew at least one of the grade 6s. Little did I know that these people would be some of my greatest friends.

Last year, my and my friend from piano always sat together and, this one class she made me sit beside a guy that was in grade 6 while she sat next to me. The guy barely had friends so he started talking to me and my friend. Then the 3 of us were picked to do this activity to identify notes and chords. He was the slowest one, while I was the fastest. My friend may have been in the middle but she was still faster than him by a long shot. On top of all that he got almost all the hard ones. My friend was really frustrated and wanted to start punching him until his nose came off. However I managed to stop her and I always try to sit in between the 2 of them.

This year, I always seemed to come early so I end up sitting at the back of the class where a bunch of girls are. These girls always make me laugh and we share our problems with each other and check our work with one another. 2 of the girls are in grade 10, 1 of them is in grade 9, the girl I knew and I are in grade 8 while my friend from my piano class was in grade 7. My classmate and I are in piano grade 6 while the others were in piano grade 7 but that didn't stop us from becoming friends. We all started off by sharing answers and working with each other. Then we became the most obnoxious of the entire class, laughing and making jokes. However we were also the smartest of the class. Always getting our answers in first. I have no doubt that I'll pass this year in flying colors too.



Another thing I did with music was the recorder in grade 6. I was in Mrs. Malcome-Tewarie's/Mr.Morris's class that year and our teacher (I forgot his name) taught us recorder. When or if my day goes bad I do look forward to our recorder classes, it made me feel better and it took my pain away. That is exactly how it works for piano, listening to music and singing. It takes my pain away. I sometimes think that is because the musical world, distracts me from the pain I receive in the real world. Which, I sometimes need a lot of. I sometimes need a way to take away pain and sorrow that I get in the real world. Some people do their favorite things, while others take pain away by adding more pain. Either way, it is all a distraction. A distraction from what actually happens so that we would calm down and possibly start over. I remember in grade 6 I was crying about something and the recorder teacher told me to close my eyes and listen to the class play the recorder and it calmed me down an I was able to play as well.



If you remember, I mentioned earlier that I went and still go to my mom's vocal and violin classes. I started off when I was 3 and when I started off, it was my mom's first group of students, and back then she had lot. She would use to arrange classes for the smaller grades on one day, the larger grades another day, for both violin and vocal separately. Normally she would have 4 classes normally however some people would want to learn on their own and not in groups. So they would get their own separate class with just them and their parents. They usually pick Saturdays and Sundays, So my mom usually has Fridays off so she would help me with practice on Fridays. Now, my mom doesn't have many students and she only had classes on Mondays, Wednesdays (Sometimes) Friday, and Sunday.



I don't just sing in my mom's class (they are all cultural songs), I learn songs online and sing them as well. I listen to songs through YouTube such as Jet Lagged by Simple Plan, Counting Stars by One Republic, Love Yourself by Justin Bieber and many others. Not only do I search the songs up online, I search up the lyrics in case I don't know what the person is saying in the song. This is not usually because my mom thinks I don't have enough to do at home, but it is because I felt the need to learn more songs since I do not know many vocal songs compared to my Piano, and Violin songs. I also like things in balance so I try to learn more songs. I even like listening to modified versions of any of the songs to see how other perceive the song or like to sing it.

So, I basically express myself musically through instruments and vocals. As you can clearly tell, I have a huge chunk of music in my life, and I am truly proud of it. I like music and it helps me have consciousness of the present world and look at things a different and more enjoyable way (In my opinion).

Mountain Range Drawings

These are a few of the Mountain Range Pastel drawings we did as a class.
Our class has done mountain range pictures for our art class. We were utilizing our entire art mornings and some of us stayed inside class in order to finish these wonderful drawings. We first drew the shape of the mountain which involved various amounts and sizes of lines. The lines first took shape of the mountain. Then we would add little cracks or edges here and there using oil pastels. When we finished drawing our lines, we would use our fingers or different parts of the hand to smudge the lines we made. We would overlap it with some color as well, such as; blue purple or pink to make the picture look a lot better. We did have to know where the smudges would go and which way, because if the smudges went the wrong way from the "sun" that we use, then the picture is WAY off. The last part (One of my favorite parts) was the sky. We had to make sure that the sun was in the proper place on where we intended it to be.  For example, in the middle, top drawing, the person wanted the sun to create shadows from the middle, so what the person did was, the smudges went the opposite direction of the sun and towards the outside of the paper. This person had a more variety of lines which made the picture look even better.

1) The song I chose was "Price Tag": Jessie J feat B.o.B. This song shows off that you don't need money to be happy, and you need to live to the fullest and most comfortable lifestyle.   

In the song it talks about how people think everything is worth something. Not that everything worth money is a bad thing, but it is hard to live only live off of thinking of money and nothing else. How does anybody stay happy that way anyways? If you only think of money. Would you put a price on your own life if that would be what it takes to obtain some money? No! It's totally not worth it! U wouldn't put a price on  life or your own personal needs! To me, my life and the life of others is priceless. If I bought their existence and life, #1, I would be broke like crazy! and #2, neither me or the life that I bought would be happy. We devote our remaining time and life to others not because we get financial pleasure, but because we WANT to devote our precious time and spend it with them. We specifically want to enjoy our time with others to claim happiness. It tells us that the price for happiness and life is love. That is what the song thinks we should exchange. Since this song shows off that particular feature what is there not to like or discover the international life of it? It expresses that we can't buy EVERYTHING in existence, and some things we can buy with our own time and devotion not to mention expression and bonds that we share. Those are all things that this song says aloud to me.  

2) Music is one of the fine arts that pleases or displeases people in many ways. You can sing religiously or just for fun. Without music we are basically living life without a beat. Also said in the song, music unites people, brings them together and expresses different kinds of bonds. Music also has different generas and there are different forms of music so that you can express your diversity. Some people can play classical music on the Piano, while others play rock music on their Electric Guitar. There are so many ways to enjoy music, it has become an important part of our lives. Without music we'd be incomplete.   

A lot of things would go wrong if we never had music. We would never pass on our messages to others in a way that they would enjoy it, and the diversity and happiness of others just fade away. If you are trying to express a social message about ANYTHING, who would listen to you if you are only talking? Who would share and express your message? Music helps us do that in a not-so-boring way. Music helps us express messages in a positive and exciting way and it spreads and spreads and spreads and spreads, until the whole world knows the message of the song, and it promotes humanity and everyone on earth is happier, more pleasant, and generally just a better person. Music already HAS that social consciousness and obligation to preach some positive messages, and it makes people happy while doing it. Songs like "Who says" By Selena Gomez, "Price Tag" By Jessie J, "Never say Never" By Justin Beiber, and many others promotes happiness and distributes positive vibes all around us, and it inspires us to be better people.   

3) Songs that have inspired me are: Price Tag, Who says, Love Yourself and many other songs. These songs are insperational in there own right, and the promote the positive vibes of others indefinatly. Few people find these songs meaningless, and they simply just sing it for the sake of singing. However, I say that these songs posses some of the key factors that are used to promote the positive vibes and happy feelings towards others. These songs can change the outcome of the mood in the lives of others. If you listen to happy, positive and up-beat songs first thing in the morning you are obviously going to be in a happy and jolly mood. However, if you listen to sad, gloomy and negative songs first thing in the morning you are going to be sad and throw out anger to everyone you meet. It's how our brain works naturally. So if people listen to positive and meaningful songs, they will automatically act that way towards the world. These three songs and many of the same kind promote loving yourself, happiness, unity, enjoying life and showing us that life is priceless and we should cherish it forever more. Each and every song that I have hand picked that has proven that I am inspired from. These songs have always put me in a good mood when I listen to them when I feel upset or moody. So that is the reason why I find these few songs inspirational.

This is our class, 8A. We have started in September but, even if it has been 4 months, it only feels like 1. I'm pretty sure all of 8A will agree when I say that the 2015-2016 grade 8s will rock this school year, and definitely leave with a bang. We will definitely have fun this year and make sure everyone is on the same boat. :)
